Nuance announces Smart TV play called Dragon TV
As a race for smart TV heats up, Nuance Communications Inc. aims to make obsolete the domestic battle for control over the TV remote. With Apple TV and Google TV both reportedly in the works, Burlington-based Nuance is making an early play at being the provider of natural language processing software for this nascent market.

MIT Media Lab picks Ito as new director
The busy MIT Media Lab has named a new director, choosing Joichi Ito, the former CEO and chair of the board of the nonprofit Creative Commons. Ito succeeds Frank Moss, who was director of the Media Lab since 2006.

Yahoo expected to shut down Maven Networks
Less than 18 months after it was acquired by Yahoo Inc., online video hosting and distribution company Maven Networks Inc. is being shut down, according to online reports. The Cambridge-based company’s products will no longer be supported by Yahoo after 2010.

Extreme Reach confirms latest round at $2.6M
Extreme Reach Inc. has raised a total of $2.6 million in venture funds, investors confirmed yesterday. The Needham-based company, which digitally delivers video ad content, in March announced an undisclosed amount of funding, as New York-based Greycroft Partners joined existing investors, Western Massachusetts-based Long River Ventures and Village Ventures.

Online game Caduceus to raise funds for Children’s Hospital
Children’s Hospital Boston is hosting a two-month online game competition in which kids raise real money as they discover the sources of diseases and solve online puzzles in a game called “Caduceus.” The funds raised will go toward research into treatments for serious childhood diseases, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
