Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. is an engineering firm that does everything from simple land surveying to environmental services to complete urban planning (not to mention a history of in-house software development), so it seems obvious that the company’s employees are focused strongly on giving back to their communities. Through volunteering, it has helped out at places like the Watertown Food Pantry and the Perkins School for the Blind.

VHB also, however, provides financial support to those organizations that it identifies as most in need, according to president and CEO Robert Brustlin, and the company has raised more than $2 million for nonprofit organizations over the last 30 years.

In 2008, VHB raised and donated more than $300,000 to many charitable organizations in the communities where employees work and live through both VHB-sponsored charity events and employee generosity. During its 17th Annual VHB-Jimmy Fund Golf Tournament, more than $100,000 was donated to the Jimmy Fund to provide support for cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. VHB’s total donation to the Jimmy Fund since the tournament launched is more than $599,000.

Brustlin says that the same philosophy of care and community runs throughout VHB and it is the responsibility of all employees to leave the company in better condition than they found it.
