Since Millipore makes products for life sciences researchers and manufacturers, it makes sense that the company has a number of health-research-related organizations in its list of principal recipients of its giving last year. Scripps Research Institute and the Harvard Stem Cell Research Institute both won support from Billerica-based Millipore this past year.

In light of the difficult economy, Millipore felt the need to give back even more strongly.

“Philanthropy, which has long been a part of Millipore’s core values, is especially vital in these challenging times,” said Martin Madaus, CEO and president of Millipore. “While we typically support initiatives relating to science, education and sustainability, this year we recognized a critical need in the social service sector, which is affected by the recession.”

While not shirking on its commitment to education and health, Millipore branched out to include support of more local community-based charities, including Habitat for Humanity Greater Lowell. In fact, just this past September, Millipore volunteers helped Habitat renovate a historic farmhouse in Bedford.
