The support of technical education is one element of Charles Stark Draper Laboratory Inc.’s corporate mission, and it is manifested in the nonprofit research institution’s commitment to advancing engineering and science education through its K-12 educational outreach programs in Greater Boston. Draper runs a highly competitive biomedical engineering summer internship for Cambridge students, places Rindge School of Technical Arts pre-engineering seniors in technical internships, and provides a number of scholarships that support young people engaged in the sciences.

“What could be more rewarding than to see students get excited about what they’re doing and to recognize the opportunities for careers in these fields for themselves?” said Kathleen Granchelli, who leads the community relations work that Draper does.

Reaching out to a younger population, approximately 20 Draper employees volunteer annually in the KeyPal program at the Kennedy-Longfellow School which pairs each student in the sixth grade one-to-one with a Draper employee for a yearlong mentorship.

Interesting philanthropic activities: Through its community grant program, Draper provides grants to nonprofits serving Cambridge. Particular emphasis is placed on educational programs in engineering, mathematics and science, followed by those in human services and arts and culture.
