22 Tech Companies That Give Back to the Community

PTC plans to make a difference

John Stuart Stuart

Giving back to the community in a way that is meaningful to the people receiving the benefit is what drives the charitable forces for Parametric Technology Corp. executive John Stuart.

“We want to make sure we differentiate ourselves from the others and are making a significant contribution to the people we are working with,” said Stuart, senior vice president of global education and community relations.

Stuart said 90 percent of the company’s initiative is around education and the ways technology and engineering are affecting it. One of the projects that is close to the company, he said is the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competition. The company has donated not only funds and volunteer hours, but also engineering and design software to help in the education aspect of the competition. As part of PTC’s sponsorship, it has donated the Windchill software, Pro/ENGINEER and Mathcad software to the robotics teams.

“We like to compete to win, and this is what we do through our collaboration with FIRST,” Stuart said.

PTC has also donated time and funds to organizations such as City Year Serve-a-thon, the Pan Mass Challenge, PTC PALS Mentoring Program and Habitat for Humanity.

“I remember in October 2003, we were working a serve-a-thon to recapture the waterfront in Boston, and we were doing it in what we called the ‘100-year-storm,’” Stuart said. “There was so much rain and so much wind, but we still had over 100 employees there.”
