The goal of the philanthropic efforts of EMD Serono Inc. is nothing short of improving the entire planet.

“We all want a better world and are convinced that communities need corporate support and partnerships to make that happen,” said Renee Connolly, vice president, U.S. communications for EMD Serono. “With a focus on science, health and education, EMD Serono is strategically partnering with community organizations on a local and national level.”

Connolly said the Rockland-based company sees no real difference between its commitments to the patients for which it develops treatments and the communities in which its employees and their families live and work.

“Our responsibility to our patients, employees, communities and environment is the cornerstone of being a responsible corporate citizen and a neighbor of choice,” Connolly said.

Its neighborly support is expressed through work with such organizations as Massachusetts Biotechnology Education Foundation’s BioTeach program, and Cradles for Crayons. In addition to corporate support, EMD Serono sets aside days for employees to take off to volunteer on company time. They have helped to support groups such as the Greater Boston Food Bank, Rockland Public Schools, and Pine Street Inn.

The health of not only people but also the planet itself is a concern at the company.

“EMD Serono considers environmental stewardship among one of our most important business responsibilities,” Connolly said. “In 2007, we launched the ‘Going Green’ campaign and received ISO 14001 Certification.”

Interesting philanthropic activities: EMD Serono participated in “community research tours” with MassBioEd’s BioTeach, aided in various community service weeks and worked with the Community Service Council. The company has an employee matching contribution program and runs community team-building events. In addition, employees help raise funds for organizations working on MS, endocrinology and cancer by participating in walks, runs, bike-a-thons and more.
