Genzyme commits to education

Caren Arnstein Arnstein

After 15 years of working with the Museum of Science, Boston, to promote education, Genzyme Corp. has raised the bar even higher with its Genzyme Biotechnology Education Initiative. To jump-start the initiative, last year the Cambridge-based biotech stalwart donated $15 million to the Museum — the largest single amount ever given by Genzyme or received by the Museum.

The initiative will help promote the growth of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, with an emphasis on the life sciences.

“The Genzyme Biotechnology Education Initiative will reach teachers, students and adults,” said Caren Arnstein, senior vice president, corporate affairs and communications, at Genzyme. “We think there is a lot to be done in life sciences education. That is why we are involved in the STEM initiatives, and why we need to support students.”

“Being a biotechnology company, it should come as no surprise that Genzyme also focuses its charity on health care. One example is our support for the Crittenton Women’s Union in Brighton, providing support for women in the low-income community,” said Arnstein.

Genzyme also partners with Mount Auburn Hospital on access to health care for immigrant communities and other, under-served communities.

Most of the inspiration behind Genzyme’s philanthropic efforts has come from employees, Arnstein said.

“We look at what our employees are interested in. Our goal underlying this is to make a meaningful contribution with a lasting impact and that plays out in everything we do.”
