19 Tech Companies That Give Back to the Community
EMC’s help crosses space, time
Grisanti
EMC Corp. is a Hopkinton-based hardware and software company that has been involved in local and national campaigns to increase math and science education for elementary, middle school and high school students.
Focusing on math and science education enables it to help local communities, officials say, but education is just one way in which the storage giant gives back. It has also given to organizations such as the American Red Cross, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Smithsonian Institution.
“EMC has been extremely committed to local communities. We recognize first-hand the goals of an educated work force,” said Vicki Grisanti, manager, EMC Investments.
EMC established the Massachusetts Mathematics Institute, now in its fifth year. The institute’s focus is to provide elementary school teachers professional development with mathematics so they apply those concepts in the classroom. It is based in Worcester, and Worcester is the only school district participating in the program right now, Grisanti said. And Chairman and CEO Joe Tucci serves on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology and serves as a member of Gov. Deval Patrick’s Readiness Project.
One ongoing project for EMC is its Information Heritage Project with museums and cultural institutions like the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
“It can be very time-consuming, but very rewarding too,” Grisanti said.
