17 Tech Companies That Give Back to the Community
Small firm Four Mangos makes a big impact
Neil C. Fennessey comes from a family with a history of giving back and has been volunteering his time and expertise all his life. As president and CEO of Four Mangos Inc., he found a philosophical match with the other executives at the company.
“It is a very interesting team — all of them have background at nonprofits,” said Fennessey.
So having a community-committed management team, and a total team of 14 employees, Four Mangos has developed a very strong philanthropy culture.
“Our philosophy is that if we as an organization are doing well, we have the power to help others who are not doing so well,” said Fennessey.
And the best way Four Mangos has found to help is by offering its services to local nonprofits.
“We would much rather do the in-kind or the pro-bono contributions than giving them cash. We want to give them something that really benefits them,” said Fennessey.
Being an integrated marketing company, Four Mangos help organizations in many ways, either by designing their logos, or putting together their website, or even helping with the management of their online resources.
“They are beyond grateful,” said Fennessey.
By doing that, Four Mangos also gets a better response from its employees. “It is much more fun for us, and as a result employees like it,” said Fennessey.
The approach that the team takes to such projects is no different from the one it would take with a business client.
“Everybody is a mango,” said Fennessey.
As a gift to the city of Cambridge, Four Mangos designed and developed a website for Agenda for Children, a program that brings together various departments to promote literacy and active out-of-school time for Cambridge’s children and families.
Another initiative was the donation of event planning and public relations services to the Central Square Theatre, a new theatre being built in Cambridge. Four Mangos helped plan, execute and promote “A Night with Matt Damon,” a fund-raiser featuring the box-office star that raised over $200,000.
In 2005, Four Mangos introduced online donation and e-communications capabilities to a number of pro-bono nonprofit clients, resulting in a new way many of these organizations reach out to donors.
One of those organizations was the LAM Treatment Alliance, an organization dedicated to finding a treatment for the disease lymphangioleiomyomatosis, or LAM. Four Mangos helped raise the funds needed to support and promote scientific research and medical advances relating to LAM.
