Charles River to use EMD Millipore technology in viral tests
By Lori Valigra
Charles River Laboratories International Inc. (NYSE: CRL) of Wilmington will exclusively license EMD Millipore’s TrueSpike technology, the companies said today.
Charles River will collaborate with EMD Millipore to integrate TrueSpike into its viral clearance services that aim to improve drug product safety. No value was given for the deal.
EMD Millipore, based in Billerica, is the Life Science division of Merck KGaA of Darmstadt, Germany.
TrueSpike technology can remove cell debris, DNA, and non-viral proteins from virus preparations that are used to validate biomanufacturing process virus clearance.
The companies said TrueSpike can cut the protein content of virus preparations up to 600 fold. A significantly cleaner prep can make validation study results more predictable and help meet validation targets, they said.
Charles River was one of four organizations that last September received a $34.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to apply to the second phase of its Knockout Mouse Project (KOMP). And last August the company moved around its business units, unifying its Research Models and Services and Preclinical Services businesses.
