PerkinElmer Inc. is teaming up with Rutgers University to supply the New Jersey college’s Cell and DNA Repository with technology for automating DNA sequencing sample preparation.
The Rutgers University Cell and DNA Repository (RUCDR) is the largest cell and DNA biobank in the United States, according to a release Thursday from Waltham-based PerkinElmer (NYSE: PKI). The technology is specifically geared toward automating sample prep for Next Generation Sequencing, a handy catch-all term for recently developed DNA sequencing technologies.
Thecproducts PerkinElmer will be supplying to the RUCDR include: Sciclone NGS Workstations, LabChip GX Nucleic Acid Separations Systems, LabChip DS Microplate Readers and Twister II Microplate Handlers. No financial value or details of the arrangement were disclosed in the release.
Kevin Hrusovsky, president, Life Sciences & Technology, PerkinElmer, said in a statement that PerkinElmer was “excited to be collaborating with a true pioneer in the field of biobanking for NGS.”
Earlier this month, PerkinElmer announced it will be filling an upcoming board vacancy with Peter Barrett, a partner at venture capital firm Atlas Venture.
In October 2011, PerkinElmer priced a senior notes offering at $500 million, with plans to apply the proceeds to the acquisition costs of its September buyout of Hopkinton’s Caliper Life Sciences Inc.
