VBI Vaccines pulls in $2.2M debt round

By Rodney Brown

Variation Biotechnologies (US) Inc., which now goes by the name VBI Vaccines, has raised $2.2 million in debt financing, federal documents show.

A total of four participants in the debt round are noted in the filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, but they are not named. Listed as related persons in the filing, however, are four board members - Michael Steinmetz of Clarus Ventures, Steven Gillis of Arch Venture Partners, Scott Rocklage of 5AM Ventures and Steven Vignau, formerly of Merck & Co.

VBI Vaccines also has operations in Ottawa. In September, the Cambridge company acquired French biotech firm Epixis SA for an undisclosed amount. Epixis makes its eVLP platform for Virus-Like Particle (VLP) vaccines, which VBI said in a news release would complement its own vaccine technology suite and add a VLP-based component. The two companies had established a relationship in June 2010, when they formed a VLP research collaboration focused on cytomegalovirus, a type of herpes virus.

Founded in 2001 as Variation Biotechnologies, a vaccine-developing company based at the time in Ottawa, Variation relocated its headquarters to Cambridge in 2007 after taking in a $35.7 million financing round led by Clarus Ventures LLC. The company is also backed by ARCH Venture Partners and 5AM Ventures and maintains its research facilities in Ottawa.

A call to CEO Jeff Baxter for comment was not immediately returned.
