RainDance, Sony collaborate on sequencing consumables

By Lori Valigra

RainDance Technologies Inc. of Lexington said it has developed methods to manufacture microdroplet-based smart consumables for high-throughput targeted DNA sequencing applications with its partners Digital Biology Co. and Sony DADC Austria AG of Salzburg, Austria.

RainDance said it will further leverage Sony’s advanced microstructure engineering and high-volume manufacturing knowhow.

The most recent smart consumable developed from the collaboration is the HeatWave TS chip, which lets researchers analyze two samples simultaneously. It uses RainDance’s automated sequencing ThunderStorm System, which can handle 96 samples per run. Researchers can generate as many as 2 million microdroplet PCR reactions per sample.

“Our customers can now process samples faster, easier and more cost-effectively than before,” Roch Kelly, senior vice president of operations at RainDance, said in a statement.
