Akamai Technologies Inc. has bought Canadian company Blaze Software Inc. for an undisclosed amount of cash, to give it a technology that speeds up Web page rendering by optimizing delivery of content.
Blaze runs as a cloud-based service, according to a release from Cambridge-based Akamai, which optimizes the code on a Web page during the delivery process so that content gets delivered faster and pages load more quickly, regardless of the end user platform – PC, tablets or smartphones. Akamai (Nasdaq: AKAM) will integrate the technology into its own content delivery offerings.
Blaze was founded in 2010, one year after a local competitor with similar technology, Cambridge-based Yottaa Inc., was founded by Coach Wei, founder and chairman of Nexaweb Technologies Inc. Yottaa calls its product Site Speed Optimizer, while the Blaze product is described as a Front End Optimization technology.
CommonAngels of Lexington was one of the backers of Blaze, the investment group announced in October 2010, in a newsletter announcing the opening of a Cambrdige satellite office for CommonAngels.
The purchase of Blaze continues Akamai’s push into the mobile market. In December, Akamai announced it was buying California-based content delivery network firm Cotendo Inc. for $268 million in cash. Cotendo makes integrated web and mobile CDN technology. Akamai in October announced a partnership with Germany-based Netbiscuits, a provider of tools for mobile site creation and publishing.
Paul Sagan, president and CEO of Akamai, was named a Mass High Tech All-Star in 2011.
