Joslin to build new diabetes research center with $10.8M support
By Michelle Lang
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center awarded a $5 million grant to the Joslin Diabetes Center, which said it plans to match the grant, bringing in a total of $10.8 million to build the Translational Center for the Cure of Diabetes in Boston’s Longwood Medical area.
Joslin Diabetes Center, a teaching and research-affiliated hospital of Harvard Medical School, said in a news release that donations will make up the matching support of the MLSC grant. The new center is expected to create about 50 new life sciences jobs.
The new center, a renovation of 20,000 square feet of space, will house labs and translational study platforms for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and prevention of the disease and of obesity, Joslin chief scientific officer Dr. George King said in a statement. It will also include 15 sub-projects covering clinical research, clinical care and basic research with translational diabetes programs.
