Azuki adds $5.1M in new funding round

By Rodney H. Brown

Azuki Systems Inc., an Acton mobile video publishing company, has closed on $5.1 million in a new financing round, federal documents state. The funding was backed by return investors Kepha Partners of Waltham and Sigma Partners of Boston, a company spokesman said.

The filing lists among its related persons Kepha founder Jo Tango and Robert Davoli, managing director at Sigma. Angel investor and former CEO of Acopia Networks Chris Lynch is also listed as a director of Azuki, as is founder and chairman Cheng Wu, who also founded Acopia.

The new round is a combination of equity and warrants and options for equity, according to the SEC document. Azuki’s last fundraise was in December 2010 for $4 million in an inside round of a planned $8 million. In total, the company has raised more than $27 million to date.

Azuki, founded in 2007, raised $3 million in January 2010 to fund a push into mobile network infrastructure. In August of that year, John Clancy, formerly president at Iron Mountain Digital, joined as president and CEO, replacing former CEO Jim Ricotta. In November, the company repackaged its software into an appliance.
