Needham email archiving service provider Sonian Inc. has acquired the email archiving business of its partner, Colorado’s Webroot Software, for an undisclosed amount.
Sonian said in a new release Friday that it will add Webroot’s customers to its own more than 9,000 customers for its cloud-based email archiving service. Jeff Dickerson, CEO of Sonian, also noted the value of getting Webroot’s channel partners in the deal. Boulder-based Webroot in turn will focus on its Internet security core business after the transaction.
According to the release, Sonian and Webroot have been working together for two years, with Sonian providing the archiving service to Webroot’s customers.
In January 2011, Sonian signed e-retailer and cloud infrastructure provider Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) as a strategic investor in a $9 million Series B round of venture capital. Prism Ventureworks and Summerhill Venture Partners of Toronto and Boston both returned to invest in the Series B round, which brought Sonian’s total outside investment near $15 million at least.
Sonian was founded in 2006 by CTO Greg Arnette, former founder and CTO of IntelliReach Corp. The company was named a Mass High Tech “Startup Watch: Five you should follow” company in October 2010.
