Constellation Pharma lands $95M deal with Genentech

By Rodney Brown

Constellation Pharmaceuticals Inc. has inked a strategic agreement with Roche Group subsidiary Genentech to develop cancer treatments based on the epigenetics expertise at Constellation, bringing it $95 million in funding.

Cambridge-based Constellation will get an unspecified up front payment from Genentech, and research funding over the course of three years to help develop treatments for cancer and other “serious diseases” based on epigenetics, the study of certain types of proteins that affect chemical modifications on specific sites on DNA or chromosomal proteins. A key to the reading of these genetic changes is the substance chromatin, which is also a target of the research in the collaboration, the companies said in a release.

The potential top end of the deal was not specified, but Constellation could also receive “substantial” milestone payments based on development and commercialization goals, as well as up to “double-digit royalties” on any commercial sales of products by Genentech that come from the agreement.

Last June, Constellation raised $15 million in a Series B extension financing, bringing its total second round of fund raising to $37 million. Existing investors Third Rock Ventures, The Column Group, Venrock Associates, SR One and Altitude Life Science Ventures all participated in the extension round.

Also that month, Constellation was recognized as a Mass High Tech “Startup Watch: Five you should follow” company.
