Mascoma begins commercializing yeast-ethanol product

By Lori Valigra

Renewable fuels company Mascoma Corp. of Lebanon, N.H., said it has implemented a commercialization strategy for its yeast product — the first application of its consolidated bioprocessing platform (CBP) — and plans to generate revenues starting in the first quarter of this year.

The Mascoma Grain Technology (MGT) yeast product is a genetically modified yeast designed to substitute for conventional fermenting of yeast. The company said it could lower costs for corn ethanol producers, which will not need to buy most of the expensive enzymes currently used in production.

Mascoma also said it is pursuing additional commercial applications of its CBP technology, including a recent joint venture with Valero Energy Corp. to develop a 20 million gallon per year commercial-scale facility in Kinross, Mich., to convert hardwood pulpwood to cellulosic ethanol.

The company’s strategy to commercialize MGT focuses on setting up strategic partnerships to launch products and get fast market acceptance. It expects to sell the MGT product to corn ethanol producers under commercial arrangements that give it a significant portion of the incremental margin generated by the product.

The company last September announced plans for a $100 million initial public offering.
