After being both a buyer and seller of companies in 2011, Brooks Automation Inc. of Chelmsford is starting 2012 off as a buyer, acquiring a cell imaging system from Cyntellect Inc. for approximately $9.2 million.
Brooks (Nasdaq: BRKS) said in a release that the majority of the employees of the Celigo Cell Cytometer product line from San Diego-based Cyntellect will be moved into an existing Brooks facility in Poway, Calif. That would be made up of the “key engineering, manufacturing, and R&D capabilities, as well as the field-based sales and support personnel.”
The Celigo cytometer is already being used by “many of the top” pharmaceutical, biotechnology and academic institutions around the globe, according to the release. While Brooks did not specify how it was being divvied up, it did say that part of the $9.2 million purchase price was being deferred for a six month period.
That Poway facility that the Celigo employees will be moving into came to Brooks through its July acquisition of Nexus Biosystems Inc., in a cash deal worth $79 million. Nexus makes automated compound and sample management solutions for life sciences companies.
In April last year, Brooks was a seller, getting $80 million in cash from Canadian firm Celestica Inc. for a contract manufacturing business unit based in Portland, Ore.
