Report: Amazon opens book on Cambridge office

By Rodney H. Brown

According to a report, California-based online retail giant Amazon.com Inc. is looking to open an office in Cambridge, eventually hiring up to 150 people.

In Friday’s edition of the Boston Globe, columnist Scott Kirsner writes that people “with knowledge of the company’s efforts” have said that Amazon is looking to establish a presence for its a2z Development Center, a unit that works on software innovations for online retail.

While Amazon bought a pair of Massachusetts companies back in the heyday of the dot-com bubble — PlanetAll and Exchange.com — it did not open an office here, unlike other technology titans such as Microsoft Corp., Google Inc. and others. In addition to acquisitions, Amazon and its executives have made investments in the Greater Boston area. In January, Sonian Inc., a Needham email archiving service provider, signed Amazon as a strategic investor in a $9 million Series B round of venture capital.

In 2009, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, through his investment firm Bezos Expeditions, participated in a Series A round of equity financing worth $7 million for Heartland Robotics Inc., the Cambridge robotics company founded by Rodney Brooks.
