Marginize chats up investors for a $1.3M round

By Rodney H. Brown

Social media comments aggregator Marginize Inc. has raised $1.32 million of what is a planned $1.45 million fundraise, according to federal documents.

Marginize makes a browser plugin that augments a web page with a sidebar enabling users to see what the world is saying about the page on Twitter, Facebook and Buzz, and interact with each other through comments and check-ins. While the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing about the new funding did not disclose specific names of the backers of the company in this new round, it did note that there were 15 investors.

Previous backers include Longworth Venture Partners and Atlas Ventures, as well as angel investors David Cohen, founder of the Techstars incubator, and Dharmesh Shah, co-founder of Hubspot Inc. That group invested in Marginize’s $650,000 seed round last August.

Marginize president and CEO Ziad Sultan founded the company in 2009, after he received a bachelor’s degree and masters degree, both from MIT in electrical engineering, and did a stint as an associate at Longworth Ventures. In an interview in May, Sultan said he developed Marginize because he wanted to “create a mechanism that would add a layer on top of a web page, independent of the underlying structure. This would allow people to share information about a particular page, comment on it, without interference from the owner.”

Sultan was not immediately available for comment this morning.
