VKernel bought by Quest Software

By Rodney H. Brown

Virtualization software company VKernel Inc. was acquired earlier this week by California company Quest Software Inc. for an undisclosed amount, according to a blog post on the VKernel website and a release from Quest.

VKernel, which makes software to improve the performance of virtualized servers in a network, will be run as an independent subsidiary of Quest, the companies said. VKernel is based in Andover, after moving into the Bay State from its original home of Portsmouth, N.H., in 2009. The company also has a newer office in The Fort Point area of Boston, which it said would become the official headquarters early in 2012, giving it added space for an increased headcount.

According to the VKernal blog post, the purchase by publicly traded Quest (Nasdaq: QSFT) will “carry us to a new stage of accelerated growth.” Company officials said that nothing would change for its customers and that VKernel is continuing to expand, hiring in the areas of development, quality assurance, sales and support.

In May 2009, VKernel landed a $7.1 million Series B round of funding from new investor Longworth Venture Partners and return investors Polaris Venture Partners and Hummer Winblad Venture Partners.

The company was founded in January of 2007 and raised its first venture round in January 2008.
