Wireless company Sand 9 raising a $6M round

By James M. Connolly

Sand 9 Inc., which is developing microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) designed to work as precise timers that would improve the capabilities of wireless devices has raised $3 million of a planned $6 million equity round, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Founded in 2007 as a spinout from the Boston University Photonics Center, Sand 9 is based in Cambridge.

Sand 9 develops silicon-based MEMS resonators designed for use in a suite of products for communications timing applications. The company says on its website that applications for its lead product, the TCMO, include GPS, LTE, 3G, WiFi, networking and industrial devices.

The SEC filing didn’t identify the investors behind the latest round. In the past, backers have included Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, General Catalyst Partners and Khosla Ventures. Last year, Sand 9 reported raising $12 million of a planned $14 million round  led by Commonwealth Capital. In 2008, it landed $8 million in its Series A round, which followed on a $2 million seed funding in 2007.

Executives include chief science officer and founder Pritiraj Mohanty, a physics professor at BU, and CEO Vince Graziani, former CEO of VBrick Systems.
