The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $45 million grant to the New England Research Institutes, located in Watertown, to support its clinical research network, the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN).
The PHN, which launched in 2001, focuses its research and development on treatments for congenital heart disease and heart diseases acquired in childhood, with support from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHBLI), a branch of the NIH.
With the $45 million grant, PHN can support nine clinical centers and NERI’s data coordinating role for five years, NERI reported in a news release today.
NERI also operates as a coordinating center for the NHBLI’s Bench to Bassinet (B2B) program, which aims to move pediatric heart research into clinical trials. Between PHN and B2B, NERI has attracted federal grants in the amount of $87 million total to date in the next five years.
Established in 1986, NERI is a contract research organization that provides support and services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, biomaterial and medical device companies.
