Medical technology developer Bruker Corp. has scooped up California tribology and mechanical testing firm Center for Tribology Inc. (CETR), paying out $13 million cash, with the potential for additional earn-out payments up to $4 million cash.
The Billerica company said in a news release that its acquisition of CETR brings the company and its 30 employees into Bruker’s Nano Surfaces division, alongside the atomic force microscope (AFM) and stylus and optical metrology (SOM) businesses. As part of the deal, CETR founder and CEO Norm Gitis will take on the role of vice president and general manager of the newly established tribology and mechanical testing (TMT) business at Bruker. Tribology is the study of friction and wear on surfaces, and CTR makes test equipment to analyze that.
Bruker (Nasdaq: BRKR) makes research instruments for the life sciences, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and molecular diagnostics industries.
The company made another acquisition in October of 2010 when it paid $229.4 million to buy the Veeco Instruments Inc.’s Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and the Optical Industrial Metrology (OIM) instruments businesses. That deal brought more than 350 employees into Bruker AXS Group’s Bruker Nano Division.
