STR Holdings to close Fla. manufacturing plant

By Michelle Lang

STR Holdings Inc., a solar module parts maker in Enfield, Conn., is closing its manufacturing facility in St. Augustine, Fla., in an effort to consolidate its U.S. operations.

The company announced the shutdown in a news release today, noting that Friday, Oct. 7, will be the last day of production at the 20,000-square-foot Florida site. Its facility in East Windsor, Conn., which occupies 275,000 square feet, will inherit the work and machinery. The site houses the company’s manufacturing plant and a research and development lab. In August 2010, the company said it was moving its manufacturing sites in Enfield and Somers, Conn., to the $19 million site in East Windsor.

STR said the shutdown should save the company about $1 million per year, though costing the company $1.2 million in closure-related costs. About 45 employees are expected to be impacted by the closure.

In August, the company sold its quality assurance business for an estimated $275 million cash to Underwriters Laboratories Inc.
