Localocracy bought by Huffington Post

By Rodney Brown

Boston startup Localocracy has been acquired by The Huffington Post Media Group, according to a press release. An online report has pegged the deal as being worth under $1 million.

According to the release, Localocracy founders Conor White-Sullivan, CEO, and Aaron Soules, CTO, will join New York-based The Huffington Post Media Group, along with vice president of technology Jay Boice. While the release made no mention of the purchase price, the online blog All Things D from The Wall Street Journal cited sources close to the deal as saying it was less than $1 million.

Founded in 2008 in Amherst, Localocracy is an online platform designed to help citizens learn about local issues, make decisions and have an impact on their government. The site is a portal for letting users know what legislative issues that are about to be voted on, ballot questions and candidates running for office.

The release about the acquisition says that, at HPMG, White-Sullivan and Soules “will build on their innovative approach to enhancing local democracy while leveraging HPMG’s powerful online community platform to engage its large and networked audience.” The Huffington Post Media Group also operates the local news business The Patch.

Last summer, Localocracy was recognized as one of Mass High Tech’s “Startup Watch: Five you should follow” companies. In April of last year, the company won $12,500 as a third-place finisher in the 2010 University of Massachusetts Amherst Innovation Challenge Final Business Plan Competition.
