Bedford robot manufacturer iRobot Corp. (Nasdaq: IRBT) has been awarded a five-year, $60 million contract to supply the U.S. Army with more of its two-foot-long combat robots that can be used for tasks such as bomb disposal and searching for improvised explosive devices.
The company’s PackBots have been used in combat throughout the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. The new contract allows the U.S. Army’s Robotic Systems Joint Program Office an unspecified number of PackBots, as well as spare parts, repairs, upgrades and service. The robots will be purchased for U.S. military use and foreign military sales.
IRobot says that it has provided more than 4,000 robots to the military and first responders.
Earlier this month, iRobot (www.irobot.com) received notice from The Boeing Co. that it is partially terminating its subcontract for the 320 SUGV robot, which was first awarded in 2004.
