Worcester Polytechnic Institute is launching new interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology, making it the only New England school offering a combined BS/MS program in the field, WPI said in a statement.
The degrees combine faculty from biology and biotechnology, computer science and math departments, with such class offerings as biovisualization, bioinformatics, biological and biomedical database mining and statistical methods in genetics and bioinformatics.
“In an era of personalized medicine, bioinformatics and computational biology will be the keys to applying our expanding knowledge of the human genome to the development of new medicines,” said Matt Ward, computer science professor and director of the bioinformatics and computational biology program.
WPI last added a new academic program in 2010 when it brought on a Ph.D. program in robotics engineering – the third university in the U.S. to offer a doctorate in the field and the first to offer undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees in robotics engineering.
