Researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston may have found a solution to protect women from sexual transmission of HIV – engineered fatty particles, called liposomes.
Using an intravaginal application filled with liposomes, women can block HIV infection during sex. Since liposomes are inexpensive and easy to make, according to anews release from the hospital, the solution could work particularly well in developing countries.
The research is being led by Daniel Kohane, director of the Laboratory for Biomaterials and Drug Delivery at Children’s Hospital Boston. So far, the liposome solution has worked effectively in female mice, with little or no inflammation.
