M2D2 set to open renovated med device incubator space in Lowell

By Michelle Lang

The University of Massachusetts Lowell is planning an official opening of its renovated medical device business incubator, the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2) on Sept. 22.

The incubator has taken on a $4 million facelift to introduce wet labs, office and meeting space in a 16,000 square-foot former mill building. Five health-focused startups working on products for glaucoma, wound care and prostate cancer now lease space in the center, with two more planning to rent space.

M2D2, a cooperative effort between the University of Massachusetts Lowell and UMass Worcester, began the startup funding program in spring 2007 and has since helped 23 companies bring their products through development. The M2D2 initiative, originally supported with seed funding from the office of the UMass president, also receives support from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s John Adams Innovation Institute and the commonwealth of Massachusetts. The initiative aims to bring Massachusetts-developed medical devices into production.
