Harvest Power acquires mulch maker

By James M. Connolly

Waltham-based Harvest Power, which is focused on producing energy from organic supplies as well as soil and mulch products, has acquired Delaware-based soil and mulch manufacturer Coastal Supply Company Inc.

The deal allows Harvest Power to expand its access to retailers through Coastal Supply’s existing relationships with retailers such as Lowe’s and The Home Depot, according to Harvest Power CEO Paul Sellew. He also noted that Harvest Power gains the service skills of the Delaware company, which sells bagged soils, mulch and stone in 14 states.

No financial details were revealed. Coastal Supply co-presidents Joe Kollock and Steve Liffers will continue to lead Coastal Supply, which will be renamed Harvest Garden Pro LLC.

Harvest Power, which processes compostable materials to generate energy and produce mulch and soil, reports that it has 300 employees in the U.S. and Canada.

Last week, Harvest Power reported  that it has raised $1.25 million of a targeted $2.25 million new funding round, according to a federal document.

Founded in 2008, Harvest Power is building what it calls North America’s first commercial-scale, high solids anaerobic digestion facility at a site in the Vancouver, British Columbia, region. According to Sellew, the facility could process 30,000 tons of food waste per year, and would turn the organic material into biogas, which could then be converted into energy such as natural gas or electricity.
