New England wind tech projects draw DOE funds

By James M. Connolly

A Massachusetts company and a pair of Maine projects received a share of $43 million in U.S. Department of Energy funds targeted at accelerating the development of offshore wind technologies and removing barriers to such wind projects.

The awards were announced Thursday by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu. A total of 19 offshore wind technology development projects will receive $26.5 million, while 22 market barrier removal projects will receive $16.5 million to research factors limiting the deployment of offshore wind in coastal areas and the Great Lakes regions. The funds are subject to appropriation by Congress.

Burlington-based Navigant Consulting received two awards, including $510,000 for a project to develop an assessment of the U.S. offshore wind market over three years. That assessment will look at how to remove technical, regulatory, financial, economic and workforce development market entry barriers. The consultancy also was awarded $350,000 to examine the existing U.S. supply chain for offshore wind technology, and identify current or anticipated gaps and barriers to filling those gaps.

The Biodiversity Research Institute in Gorham, Maine, was awarded $4.5 million for a project that will examine existing data on bird, sea turtle and marine mammal populations and movement in the mid-Atlantic, and to perform surveys of species that are at high risk to turbine interactions.

Stantec Inc. of Topsham, Maine, was awarded $600,000 to collect information on offshore bird and bat activity, and to refine equipment, methods and logistics to aid in the development of a remote offshore bird and bat migration data collection and monitoring system.
