Konarka, ThyssenKrupp to build solar roof

By James M. Connolly

Solar energy firm Konarka Technologies Inc. of Lowell, has partnered with German steel maker ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe to develop steel roof components that utilize Konarka’s photovoltaic material.

The solar roof will incorporate Konarka’s Power Plastic, which is designed to replace conventional building materials in applications such as roofs, skylights and facades.

According to Konarka, the new roof will differ from other photovoltaic systems in that it will be integrated into the building structure rather than need to be mounted on a raised structure.

During ThyssenKrupp’s production process, the steel is coated with films, paint or plastic coatings.  With the Konarka agreement, the coating lines will be used to apply Konarka’s organic photovoltaic surface.

Last month, Konarka said it had settled a lawsuit it co-filed in 2009 over allegations that a Pennsylvania solar company had infringed a solar power technology patent.
