Thermo Fisher to cut 122 NH jobs

By Michelle Lang

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is cutting 122 jobs in New Hampshire in a move to “increase efficiencies” and “improve competitiveness” for the Waltham-based life sciences equipment supplier, a spokesperson said.

The job cuts include 109 positions from Thermo Fisher’s laboratory equipment manufacturing site in Newington, N.H., and 13 jobs from its assembly facility in Portsmouth, N.H. The manufacturing positions will move to the company’s Asheville, N.C., site, where 110 new jobs will open up. The assembly positions will transfer to a Marietta, Ohio, site.

The Asheville Chamber of Commerce has reported on its website that the new positions will be manufacturing and assembly jobs for high-efficiency cooling pumps. The facility already supports manufacturing of ultra-low temperature freezers.

Thermo Fisher has made a number of acquisitions in recent months. In August, it completed its buy of Swedish diagnostics company Phadia for $3.5 billion. July saw the company buy up Ohio firm TREK Diagnostic Systems from Chelmsford’s Magellan Bioscience Inc.
