TransMedics taps backers for $6M in new funds

By Rodney H. Brown

Andover organ transplant tech company TransMedics Inc. has closed on $5.9 million of a planned $22.5 million in a new equity round, federal documents show.

The nine investors in the new round were not named in the filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, but previous backers of the company have included a raft of firms – 3i Group, Alta Partners, CB Health Ventures, Flagship Ventures, JP Morgan, Posco BioVentures, Sagamore Bioventures, Sherbrooke Capital, Tudor Investment Corp. and VantagePoint Venture Partners.

The news follows a little more than a year after TransMedics raised $35 million in a March 2010 funding round. This newest funding brings the total investment in TransMedics to more than $130 million since it was founded in 1998.

TransMedics intends to provide more effective organ transplant support technologies. Its Organ Care System (OCS) is designed to keep harvested organs fresh before the transplant operation. In 2008, TransMedics pulled its registration for an initial public offering it originally filed in 2007, with TransMedics officials citing unfavorable market conditions at the time.
