Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has created a project center on Nantucket, where students can work on community projects, addressing such issues as sustainability and energy use, as part of the school's Global Perspective Program.
WPI said it has had nine pilot projects on Nantucket in the last two years, and the new project center is its 27th global project center – the other centers spread across five continents.
The school includes a graduation requirement in which students must complete two projects that apply their classroom knowledge to "real-world problems." Previous Nantucket projects have addressed the possibility of bringing smart-grid technology to the island, boosting security of the community's IT systems and gauging the feasibility of incorporating electric vehicles on the island.
