Somerville-based iCar, Wheels to Go, an hourly-rate, car-sharing service focused on fuel-efficient vehicles, has shut down just one year after its launch, Boston.com has reported.
The women-owned startup was founded in 2010 and was named a Mass High Tech "5 you should follow" company late last year.
Boston.com reported that iCar members, which number several hundred, will gain a free year's membership to Mint Cars, a New York-based car-sharing service that launched in 2008 and entered the Boston market in March.
Both services compete against the leading car-sharing service in the U.S., Zipcar Inc. (Nasdaq: ZIP), which operates in 79 U.S. cities and has expanded to cities in Canada and U.K. According to the website of the Somerville Scout, the company was founded by Nancy Walsh and Jippy Kheel, the wives of Pat Walsh and Dan Cogan, respectively, who run U-Save Auto Rental in Somerville.
