Tantaline taps backers for $3.6M in Series B money

By Rodney Brown

Tantaline, a nanotechnology coatings company with headquarters in Denmark and Waltham, has raised $3.6 million in a Series B round of funding, according to a company press release.

Leading the round was previous investors Berwind Private Equity in the U.S. and Vaekstfonden on Denmark, along with new Danish investor CC Holdings. Tantaline stated in the release it would use the new funds to “markets and technical capabilities in the United States and Europe.”

According to the Tantaline website, another investor in Danfoss Group, a Danish industrial equipment giant that is focused on climate and energy industries.

Founded in 2007, Tantaline’s technology creates a vapor from pure metallic tantalum, which it deposits as a coating so thin it binds with the material of the metal product being coating, creating a tough, corrosion-resistant surface alloy. According to officials, the resulting alloy is more resistant to corrosion than titanium, zirconium, or other commonly used alloy coatings. Target industries for the company include oil and gas, chemical processing, energy, pharmaceuticals, and mining.

In March of 2009, Tantaline was named as one of the Startup Watch: Five Your Should Follow companies for that week.
