Knome's genome sequencing platform boosted by $5M funding

By Michelle Lang

Cambridge-based genome analysis platform company Knome Inc. has pulled in $5 million of an expected $20 million equity funding round, federal documents show.

The filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission indicated participation from one investor, though the backer was not identified specifically. Knome’s previous backers include French diagnostics firm bioMerieux, which put $5 million into an equity stake in the Cambridge company in April 2010.

Knome was co-founded in 2007 by Harvard University geneticist and Knome chief scientific advisor George Church, a 2010 Mass High Tech All-Star; CEO Jorge Conde; and co-chair Sundar Subramaniam. Among the directors listed on the regulatory filing as related persons are Stéphane Bancel, former CEO of bioMeriux and recently appointed chairman of BG Medicines, a Waltham maker of biomarker-based diagnostics.

In November of 2009, the company released its human genome sequencing and data processing service, called KnomeDiscovery. Earlier in 2009, Knome teamed up with SeqWright, of Houston to provide genomic analysis through a federally approved laboratory for clinical testing. In May of 2009, Knome launched its genomic analysis offering at a price that comes to about $1 per gene.
