Halamka to resign from Harvard Med School CIO post

By Michelle Lang

John Halamka, chief information officer at both Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School (HMS), is stepping down from his post at HMS. He announced the news Thursday on his blog, “Life as a Healthcare CIO.”

In his own words, “I believe that Harvard Medical School requires a full time dedicated CIO with a skill set in highly scalable infrastructure and the tools needed to support emerging science.”

In his blog, he pointed out HMS’s need for new tools to address whole genome analysis, image analysis and other data storage processes.

Halamka wrote that he plans to continue as an advisor to Harvard Medical School and will help find a replacement for his position. He will focus on “new health information exchange initiatives at BIDMC” once his Harvard Medical School replacement is determined.

Halamka has been an advocate for regional and national initiatives to advance health information technology and electronic medical records. He serves as co-chair of the HIT Standards Committee, professor at Harvard Medical School, and a practicing emergency physician.
