IRobot Corp. (Nasdaq: IRBT) has signed a deal with telemedicine systems provider InTouch Health to explore opportunities for healthcare applications based on iRobot’s robotics platforms.
Bedford-based iRobot and InTouch Health, based in Santa Barbara, Calif., said the agreement is a joint development and licensing pact, and that it will look for applications for technologies such as iRobot’s Ava mobile robotics platform. The companies said that InTouch Health and its founder Yulun Wang have been pioneers in the use of robots in hospitals and in remote presence technologies.
Beginning in spring of 2010, iRobot and CEO Colin Angle have been sharing with the public plans for the company to expand further into the healthcare market, paricularly in the areas of remote healthcare and assistive technologies for the elderly. In April of this year, Tod Loofbourrow, founder of Authoria Inc., reported that he had left his post heading up a healthcare robotics development effort at iRobot. At that time, Angle said the program was to be folded into the company’s consumer division.
