SmartBear buys Swedish web testing firm

By Kyle Alspach

SmartBear Software Inc. said Tuesday it has acquired Eviware, a Swedish firm that created soapUI, a popular open source web services testing tool. SmartBear has about 170 employees, and the acquisition of Eviware will increase that figure by about 10 percent, according to SmartBear.

SmartBear, a Beverly-based software testing tools company, did not disclose terms of the acquisition – the second for the company in three months. In April, SmartBear acquired Florida-based AlertSite.

Eviware’s products have 800,000 users and have 4,000 daily downloads, according to SmartBear. The soapUI tool is offered in both free and professional versions.

SmartBear has its origins in a July 2010 merger between three companies — one in Beverly, one in Texas and one in Russia. The three were acquired by New York private equity firm Insight Venture Partners over a two-year period beginning in 2007.
