Epizyme to land $7.5M from Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

By Michelle Lang

Epizyme Inc., a Cambridge firm focused on personalized cancer therapeutics, is due to receive up to $7.5 million in milestone payments from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for the development of the company’s DOT1L-targeted histone methyltransferase inhibitor for Mixed Lineage Leukemia (MLL), a blood cancer that can hit both pediatric and adult patients.

The funding from LLS will cover Epizyme’s development of the leukemia treatment through Phase 1 trials.

Epizyme develops personalized treatments for cancer and rare diseases, focusing mainly on small molecule inhibitors of histone methyltransferase.

Epizyme announced in March that it had partnered with Japanese firm Eisai Co. Ltd. in a deal that could bring the Cambridge company more than $200 million. The partnership centers around the development and commercialization of new treatments aimed at the epigenetic enzyme, EZH2, for lymphoma and genetically-defined cancers.

In January, Epizyme formed a development and commercialization alliance with GlaxoSmithKline worth potentially more than $630 million in milestone payments.
