GT Solar grows Salem facility, workforce

By Kyle Alspach

GT Solar International Inc. (Nasdaq: SOLR) has hired 30 employees in Massachusetts since acquiring a Salem-based company in mid-2010, and plans to hire another 30 in the state by the end of the year after nearly doubling the size of the Salem manufacturing facility.

GT Solar, based in Merrimack, N.H., said it has added 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space at the facility since acquiring Crystal Systems Inc. in July 2010, bringing the factory to 50,000 square feet. The $27 million project, which also included the addition of 10,000 square feet of office space, was to be celebrated with a ribbon cutting event Tuesday.

GT Solar’s expansion in Massachusetts comes as the company diversifies its solar power equipment business to include sapphire crystallization equipment. The equipment is needed for producing substrates for LED, and earlier this month GT Solar said it received a $460.4 million order for the equipment — the company’s largest order of any kind to date.

GT Solar said it currently employs 76 people at the Salem facility, a figure that will reach 106 by the end of the year. Crystal Systems employed 46 when it was acquired, GT Solar said.
