General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE:GD) added 108 new employees at its Pittsfield facility in the first 100 days of the year, surpassing the company’s goal of hiring 100 in that time period, Gov. Deval Patrick announced Tuesday during a visit to the facility.
General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems is working at the facility under a contract from the U.S. Navy to help construct Littoral Combat Ships. The contract was received in December, and employees at the facility build, integrate, test and deliver the electronics systems for the specialized combat ships.
General Dynamics expects to hire a total of 500 new employees over five years for work on the Littoral Combat Ships, with the Navy seeking to acquire a fleet of 55. The ships are estimated to cost $500 million each to build.
General Dynamics currently employs 1,100 in Pittsfield, according to the announcement from Patrick’s office. More than half of the new employees have been hired from inside Berkshire County, with the other half split between Massachusetts and outside of Massachusetts, General Dynamics said in the announcement.
