Skyworks snags second buy with California analog chip company

By Michelle Lang

Just one week after buying SiGe Semiconductor Inc., mobile chipmaker Skyworks Solutions Inc. has acquired a second company – Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc., an analog semiconductor firm in Santa Clara, Calif. The cash and stock deal is worth $262.5 million.

Woburn-based chipmaker Skyworks set a nominal price tag of $6.13 per share of the acquired company. Advanced Analogic currently has 42.83 million shares. The sale price, which is subject to a number of variables based on the value of Skyworks stock, is split between cash and Skyworks common stock shares.

Advanced Analogic Technologies (Nasdaq: AATI) is expected to broaden Skyworks’ business to include battery chargers, voltage regulators, DC/DC converters and LED drivers.

Skyworks (Nasdaq: SWKS) makes a range of analog and mixed signal semiconductors, including front-end chips and power amplifier chips used in Apple Inc.’s iPhone 4.

In February, Skyworks announced it was teaming up with Ember Corp. on next-generation wireless products for “smart” buildings. The products will combine Skyworks’ front-end modules with Ember’s chips and will target the energy management, home area network and industrial automation markets.
