French drug company Sanofi-aventis SA, the new parent company of Cambridge biotech Genzyme Corp., has simplified its name to Sanofi at its annual shareholders meeting on Friday.
The company made the change public in a summary of meeting activity, which included approval of a dividend of 2.5 euros per share, payable June 16. The announcement of the name change comes just under a month after Sanofi completed its $20 billion takeover of Genzyme Corp.
A Sanofi spokesman told international media outlets that the company shortened its name to make it easier to pronounce, particularly in languages such as Chinese.
There also were reports by Reuters that Sanofi officials told shareholders that the company plans to slow down its pace of acquisitions.
Genzyme, now operating as a Sanofi subsidary, last month announced that five years after a Phase 2 clinical trial, about two-thirds of its patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) taking the company’s drug candidate alemtuzumab did not experience relapse or sustained disability increases.
