MassTLC: Local mobile sector employs 30,000

By James M. Connolly

In a report released at its spring meeting in Cambridge today, the Mass Technology Leadership Council said that the Greater Boston mobile technology sector now employs 30,000 people in 400 companies.

The industry association’s Mobile Cluster conducted the study of employment at the various companies. MassTLC said in a press release that Massachusetts has “created a mobile hotbed” with growth driven in large part by young entrepreneurs focused on application development.

“This is the first time we’ve quantified what has become readily apparent to the mobile industry – the Boston area is a world-leading wireless innovation hub. The energy in the Boston area is second to none,” said cluster co-chair Walt Doyle in prepared statement. Doyle is CEO of Where Inc., which is being acquired by eBay.

The report said that more than 80 percent of the mobile companies had fewer than 50 employees. MassTLC said that investment in startups in the sector reached $82 million dollars in 2010, a 40 percent increase over 2009, according to data supplied by the research firm Rutberg & Co. Rutberg’s data said that investment is on track to double this year.
